Periodontal Maintenance

Periodontal disease is similar to other chronic diseases such as diabetes. The key to control is early diagnosis and treatment, followed by prompt ongoing treatment. This entails periodontal maintenance procedures (PMP) or supportive periodontal therapy (SPT).  SPT will help in gaining control of the disease and increase your chances of keeping your teeth.

If periodontal bacteria are not cleaned out every 90 days, the bacteria can increase to a point where bone loss starts to occur again. This is why periodontal cleanings every three months are very important and recommended by the American Academy of Periodontology.

Your Periodontal Maintenance visit will include:

  1. An Update of Your Medical and Dental History.

  2. A Periodontal Examination and Measurement of Your Pockets

  3. Oral Cancer Screening

  4. Tooth Crown and Root Cleaning and Polishing

  5. Oral Hygiene Instructions

Your periodontist and your general dentist work together as a team to provide you with the best possible care. Many times periodontal cleanings will be alternated between our office and your general dentist.  Ongoing SPT treatments in our office, combined with dental visits and cleanings at your general dentist's office, will ensure your optimum oral health and highest possible care.

To prevent re-infection and avoid more invasive periodontal treatment, it is quite important that you follow the periodontal maintenance program set out by Dr. Komarnyckyj and your general dentist.
